Parent company McNicholas has been delivering vital infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland for three generations. Part of their core ability lies in their unique technical design capabilities; being able to provide specialist solutions to complex infrastructure challenges.

By capitalising on this specialism and offering an outsourced design service a flourishing business developed. Initially relying on reputation and industry contacts it soon became apparent that a standalone identity and brand story could accelerate growth further.

How could we define a standalone identity for the brand, while still indirectly drawing strength and attributes from the mother brand?

Approach

Finding the ‘Source’ of the brand.

Our initial steering group meeting between our project team and client very quickly revealed the brand narrative. The specialist service was driven by intelligence and collaboration – we anchored our approach around this standpoint and started to define the brand story and language.

Branding

The project team set out to capture the importance of connectivity with a play on collaboration and partnership. Through the design process ‘Source’ oversee and liaise with various bodies, It was crucial the ‘S’ symbol embodied this system. The symbol capitalises on the businesses technological and digital strength and ensures it still remains anchored to the positive collaborative foundations within the business.

Language & Style

After defining Source’s positioning narrative and communication style, we worked closely with their core team to establish every aspect of the brand visual language. We used Source’s feedback at every stage to ensure they were fully engaged with defining brand colours, typography and photography.

Digital

Following on from the new brand identity and guidelines a website was built to take the brand out to the market. Our digital team set out to create a fully responsive online experience that was effortless in conveying carefully considered content and expressing their business offer and expertise. It was important the website was visually engaging with clear a brand presence and a distinct point of difference from all competitors.

Results

Our brand and digital team had a very clear direction from the beginning, we wanted to create an identity that had substance, language that was unique to Source but with a great point of difference from the competitors. We setout to establish a brand that represented innovation, experience and intelligent engineering. The final outcome was delivered through a fully responsive CMS website with supportive brand standards guide.

Source made a confident introduction to the marketplace, reaching out to all its extended partnerships and receiving myriad of positive responses. The business has since gone strength to strength, with much more to come.
